An automotive manufacturer was looking for a way to save money while attaching a stamped steel timing belt cover to an aluminum die-cast housing. The current application used nine fasteners per cover. Estimated volumes for the first year of production were 433,333 engines resulting in 3.9 million fasteners.
Replace the nine current machine screws with nine M6-1.0 x 15mm external TORX® Flange Head DUO-TAPTITE® fasteners. Cost savings were achieved due to the following advantages:
- TAPTITE® fasteners reduce component cost.
- Thread-forming screws support company fastener initiatives.
- TAPTITE® fasteners are supported by the manufacturers preferred suppliers.
- TAPTITE® fasteners are supported by the automotive company’s fastener engineering, supply base, and REMINC.
Current machine screw $0.0215/ea
Current machine screw with corrosion upgrade $0.0254/ea
Cost-savings to eliminate tapping operation (Additional savings are possible, if drilling operation is also eliminated)
DUO-TAPTITE® thread-forming screw $0.0266/ea
(Additional cost compared to current machine) $0.0012/ea
Net savings per attachment $0.0288/ea
$0.0288 x 9 attachments/cover equals a savings of $0.259/cover
$0.259 x 433,333 estimated engines equals a savings of $112,233.00/yr
